Józef Dietl (24.01.1804-18.01.1878), a specialist of internal medicine and rector of Jagiellonian University in Cracow, president of Cracow.
Prof. Dietl came from Polish- German family, studied in Lvov and Wien. In 1851 he succeeded to the internal medicine department in Cracow and soon became one of the most outstanding professors of the Jagiellonian University. He reformed university clinics, introduced new methods into scientific researches and practical treatment. He initiated and developed climatic and balneological ways of treating. Prof. Dietl popularised Krynica, Szczawnica, Żegiestów, Rabka, Iwonicz, Krzeszowica and Swoszowice (all are health resorts nowadays).In 18660-74 Józef Dietl was elected the first autonomic president of Cracow. He drew up a programme of the city development and contributed to its modernisation.
